Big Swamp

On the Flinders Highway, between Port Lincoln and Wangary, sits Big Swamp.  You won't miss it as the Highway cuts it in two. It's a nice spot for bird watching, in particular, at sunset or sunrise.

Dolphins at Port Lincoln Tourist Park

Dolpins in front of this fishing boat
We often head to the jetty at the Tourist Park for a sunset squid.  Visiting in the summer school holidays we were shocked to see so many people on the Jetty.  Feeling a little dissapointed that we wouldn't have it all to ourselves we headed to the left and set up on the slipway.  As we ventured out we were greeted by a very playful pod of Dolphins.  Splashing around, having a great time.

We didn't catch any squid, but the Dolphins made up for it...

Doing the Wave

Driving in South Australia, in particular The Eyre Peninsula you may have noticed that everybody does the wave!

This wave doesn't come from knowing someone and it doesn't come from being courteous.  You just wave when you pass someone.  Once you get the hang of it, it sort of seems rude not to...

The courtesy wave can be used in a variety of situations:
  • When merging lanes and your fellow driver creates space for you to merge
  • When driving on a narrow street and the oncoming driver pulls over allowing you to pass
  • When yielding right of way when the right-of-way is unclear
  • When acknowledging a driver of the same vehicle – a particular favourite of motorcyclists and Kombi drivers
  • When apologising for a driving indiscretion such as (accidentally) cutting off another driver
versus the Eyre Peninsula wave, which is just used all the time, whenever you pass another car, a pedestrian, a person.

Farm Beach

SELF DRIVE:  53km/50mins EX PORT LINCOLN

In the outback, down a dusty dirt road sits the beautiful, sweeping Farm Beach.  It's located approximately 50kms north west of Port Lincoln.  A popular pad for launching boats straight off the sand, this beach has a 20 metre section of clear shallow water (give or take with tides) before dropping off into the deep blue sea.  There are not a lot of beaches on Eyre Peninsula that have such close access to deep water so this makes farm beach particularly special.

Popular spot to launch your boat means that cars are parked all along the beach
